Favorite Wine: 08 Norton
Yes, give the Norton a few years, NWT! I visited Yellow Farmhouse this past weekend and had a delightful tasting with the winemaker who kept pouring the Norton into my glass after I told him how much I wanted it to open up. They're tasting the 08 vintage, which I bought, and after letting it breathe for about 30 minutes, it opens up to be an incredible Norton. I should have bought more than I did, but Defiance is a short drive from Columbia... The winery has the misfortune or something of being situated between two bars, so much of the clientele are interested in sweeter wines which is customary in Missouri. The Norton was the most notable of the wines I tasted that day.

Favorite Wine: Oaked Dry Vignoles
we liked the whites better than the reds here although the Norton was not bad. We came after tasting room hours and a hostess there was very accommodating to us when she didn’t have to be. The trade off though was that because we were in the way of an event they were having she hurried us very quickly through the tastings. Other than the first two whites, I can’t remember anything specifically other than to say they were all surprisingly good. Actually I remember the last one which was an experimental variety from Cornell University with a license number NY76. The first two were dry Vignoles we liked a lot too. One was steel and the other was oaked. Don’t think I have ever had an oaked Vignoles but this was very good. I remember there was a nice Edelweiss as well. The Norton seemed average which in this part of Missouri is another way of saying good. We felt the whites were definitely the strong point here. The oaked dry Vignoles really caught my attention. Another mention is that the owner also greeted us and was so enthusiastic about welcoming us (in a friendly and unforced way) and enthusiastic about his winemaking efforts that it was just contagious. Some of these owners just have a tremendous gift of hospitality. One of the things we really like about our little hobby. We also happened to catch the once a month Friday night movie night which brought a nice cozy crowd to their outside seating area which greatly added to the ambiance of the evening.

Norton Wine Review: New facility and vineyards smack dab in the middle of a sharp curve in a small town (don't blink, or you will miss Defiance, MO entirely). We did get to try this very, very young wine from vines still acclimating to the surrounding soils at the 2008 Norton Wine festival in St. Louis. Too young to make any serious comments on this wine at this time. Farmhouse is not set up yet for daily tours or tastings. Give them a few years and cross your fingers for another fine winery near this town. Meanwhile, search out Chandler Hill and Montelle Winery which are very close by.
