Norton Wine Review: We went to Jowler Creek Winery specifically for their Norton wine, but found more refreshingly a host, Lexie, who was proud of her work setting and the surrounding Weston community. You have a limited selection (2 reds, 2 whites, 1 blush, 1 blend, 1 'bubbly' & 1 dessert wine) from this totally "Green Winery" (the chickens & goats roam freely). An interesting, non-grapefruit overtoned, yet still citrus tasting Traminette ($16) is offered. The 2014 Chambourcin ($20) was produced in stainless steel infused for a few months with oak staves/chips. We found the 2014 Norton ($20) too young and light to truly enjoy. I have reservations thinking that age will enhance this offering.

Jowler Creek has a very nice outdoor seating area. The indoor tasting room was small but sufficient. I wasn't too taken with the wine and the owner seemed busy. It was just ok.

Favorite Wine: Red Cock-A-Doodle Do & Critter Cuvee
A surprisingly small winery, but the staff's enthusiasm made up for it. Ryan was a believer in the product, and it showed. The wines were good, if pedestrian. I am a fan of sweet wines, so the high points were Butterfly Blush, Critter Cuvee, and Red Cock-A-Doodle Do, but the Vignoles would be a good table wine choice. Not my favorite winery, but I would go back, and would recommend it.

Favorite Wine: Red Cock-a-Doodle Do
We liked our enthusiastic host and the whole sustainable ag theme of this winery. The dry Norton and Chambourcin were a little light to our liking. We would have preferred more fruit and oak. They have a sweet but very light Catawba blend called Butterfly Blush. Sweet without being syrupy. I picked their Red Cock-a-Doodle Do as my favorite because it is very different from others I have tried. This last wine is a Concord-Norton blend with a good Concord start but a nice Norton finish that reminds me of cloves when it is done. Don't know if I could drink a whole glass of it or not. But we bought a bottle of it so we will find out. The Nort (Norton Port) is decent at a lower price point. Yet there are several other Norton ports I like better. The winery and local countryside is very nice. The Babydoll Sheep are not to be missed. We will visit again.

Neat place, very easy to find. I really appreciated the label art, the design of the building, the friendly owners. I picked up a Norton/Concord blend for a friend who prefers sweeter wines. Their Chambourcin is ready to drink now.
