Favorite Wine: Temparia

We finally got back to Cuthills after roughly 10 years. Way too long in between. Ed and Holly were even more gracious than on previous visits. And Ed is just so knowlegeable about, well, everything to do with wine, plant breeding, soils, on and on the list goes. Facinating. We didn't try every wine but we tried quite a few and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. As Allison stated in the other review here, the Temparia is very nice. It's not oaked but it has complexity that would make you almost think it is. We bought five bottles of this. Temparia is a wine to drive out of your way to get. I just fell in love with a sample of a 7 yr old Cabernet Franc Ed let us try. The best Cab Franc I have ever had. Usually Cab Franc is a bit too much for me. But this one was very tamed down. He also has a Marquette under development that I really liked. Each sip was better than the previous one. Smooth on the front with a tartness on the end that left you wanting to drink more. When this Marquette comes available I will definitely want some of it. I also tried the 2011 Field Blend which in this case is made from roughly a dozen varietals Ed breeds for Nebraska. Very nice but my wallet wouldn't let me purchase everything. Darnit. I guess I could go on and on abou each one. We purchased just about everything we tried if it was for sale: Temparia, Poet's Red, St. Pepin, Brianna and Petit Amie. The last three are whites and they were just a pinch sweet but each had a nice drier light finish. Difficult to say which of the whites I liked best. Maybe the Petit Amie. We didn't have time to check it out and Ed had me so entranced with all things wine I forgot to ask him about it but there is a very new and nice looking Bed & Breakfast next door. Also be aware there is a State Recreation Area within a mile of the winery.

Favorite Wine: 2010 Temparia

I feel greatly honored to have met Ed Swanson, a true vigneron and owner of Cuthills Vineyards. Ed is responsible for viticulture in Nebraska, as he began crossing the native Vitis riparia with Vitis vinifera vines back in the mid 1980s. His contribution to viticulture is unmatched in the Midwest. He has created hundreds of crosses including the incredibly supple Tempranillo x V. riparia with which he creates his Temparia--a gorgeous dry red wine with an incredible finish. His beautiful Field Lot series includes grapes from over 60 crosses. He sells out of older vintages and is drinking the 2010 vintage now. I bought one bottle to drink now and one to put away for a few years. His whites are brilliant and bright with nice overtones of apricot, pear, and floral notes. He makes sweeter wines as well. This winery is among my top 3 favorite wineries in America.
