Larry Ruhlman's Wine Journal Entries

Mill Bridge Winery (written Mar 08, 2019)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Visited here and enjoyed the atmosphere and wines.

Carolina Vineyards and Boardwalk Winery (written Sep 25, 2016)
Wine: 3 stars Winery: 2 stars Ambiance: 2 stars

Visited the store at Broadway at the Beach so there was no winery experience. It looked like a popular place to visit as there was a nice crowd. Wine was ok, we found one we liked and purchased a bottle.

Georgia Winery, The (written Jul 28, 2016)
Wine: 3 stars Winery: 3 stars Ambiance: 3 stars

Penn Shore Vineyards (written Jul 28, 2016)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Presque Isle Wine Cellars (written Jul 28, 2016)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Keswick Vineyards (written Jul 28, 2016)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 5 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Favorite Wine: Trevillian

Visited winery in July 2016. Wine tasting fee is $10 to taste 5 wines, much more than most wineries (and that didn't include a glass). Wines were very good, staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. We purchased a bottle of Trevillian (white wine).

Sumner Crest Winery (written May 29, 2016)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 3 stars Ambiance: 3 stars

Favorite Wine: Reisling

The winery was close to the interstate which made it easy to visit but it's not on a vineyard setting. The wines were good, we thought better than average. The staff was friendly. We will return and recommend it to other travelers.

Smith-Berry Winery (written Oct 13, 2015)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars

Favorite Wine: Chambourcin, Moscato

We saw the sign while traveling on Interstate 71 and decided to stop. The winery was about 8 miles from the interstate but well worth the trip. The winery grounds are gorgeous and the barn and wine tasting room rival any that we have been to. They have a very nice outside area with tables and chairs so you can sit out and enjoy your wine. The young lady that helped us seemed knowledgeable of the wine. We tasted several wines before selecting the Chambourcin and Moscato as our favorites and bought a bottle of each. We frequent that stretch of highway a couple times a year and will stop again. If you are between Louisville and Cincinnati stop in and visit this winery.

Beans Creek Winery (written Nov 10, 2013)
Wine: 3 stars Winery: 3 stars Ambiance: 2 stars

Favorite Wine: Bonnaroo White

Winery was located adjacent to I24, there's no visible vineyard. We found a couple wines we found acceptable.

Noble Winery (written Jul 02, 2013)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Johnson Estate Winery (written Jul 02, 2013)
Wine: 5 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Natchez Hills Vineyard (written Nov 10, 2012)
Wine: 5 stars Winery: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars

Favorite Wine: Riesling and Blush

Visited Natchez Hills for the first time today. We were greeted in the driveway by Jim & Karen Odom, owners of Natchez Hills. We were given a tour of the beautiful event center. We went into the tasting room where Jim told us about the hand crafted cabinets and the building. He was a very good wine host, taking the time to explain each wine and we found 2 that we really liked. We will return to Natchez Hills regularly.

Grinder's Switch Winery (written Nov 10, 2012)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars

Favorite Wine: River Blush and Muscadine

Beautiful setting for a winery. Nice log cabin and other buildings surrounding it. We had a pleasant visit and enjoyed the wines. Owner was inviting and knowledgeable, even the 2 winery dogs were friendly. This winery completed our Natchez Trace Winery tour of the 4 wineries.

Mountain Valley Winery (written Nov 10, 2012)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Favorite Wine: Mountain Valley White & Mountain Valley Blush

Mountain Valley was our last stop on the "Rocky Top Wine Trail" and we picked up our free wine glasses. We liked many of the wines and settled on our top 3 for a 3 pack special. The tasting host was knowledgeable and helpful. Overall it was a very enjoyable visit and we would recommend their wines to everyone.

Long Hollow Winery and Vineyards (written Nov 10, 2012)
Wine: 3 stars Winery: 3 stars Ambiance: 3 stars

Favorite Wine: Reisling

Visited the winery recently for the first time. They have a nice gift shop with many nice wine bottles holders and Stu Phillips music photos. We didn't find too many wines that we liked

Tennessee Valley Winery (written Jun 18, 2012)
Wine: 3 stars Winery: 3 stars Ambiance: 3 stars

Favorite Wine: Mountain Blush

We stopped on our way home from a vacation in the Smokies. It's a small winery with a very small tasting room. The wines we tasted were ok but we didn't find anything we "loved". We bought a bottle of "Mountain Blush" which has a nice flavor. They just built a new outdoor stage area for summer entertainment. We didn't like the little plastic cups used for tasting.

Amber Falls Winery & Cellars (written Dec 20, 2011)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars

Favorite Wine: Pattriot

Very nice winery and experience. The staff, including the dog, were friendly and helpful. The owners have done an excellent job building a nice facility and one of the most scenic wineries around. There were many excellent wines.

Jules J. Berta Vineyards (written Dec 12, 2011)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Favorite Wine: Reisling

Sugarland Cellars (written Nov 14, 2011)
Wine: 5 stars Winery: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars

Favorite Wine: Martha Jane Rosé, Baskins Creek Blanc, & Wiley Oakely

We had a great time at Sugarland. We paid for the tour that was very informative and got a nice wine glass. We enjoyed almost all of the wines we tasted and finally settled on our top 3 for a 3 pack special. This is a brand new winery and a new, beautiful facility. We will make this a regular stop every time we visit Gatlinburg.

Hillside Winery (written Nov 14, 2011)
Wine: 3 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Favorite Wine: Hillside Spumante

We had a nice tour of the winery. The tasting host was great but we didn't find many wines we liked. We bought 2 bottles of Hillside Spumante sparkling.

Apple Barn Winery (written Nov 14, 2011)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars

Nice winery and pleasant staff for tasting. Most wines are made from or blended with apples which is appropriate considering it's the Apple Barn.

Keg Springs Winery (written Sep 11, 2011)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 3 stars Ambiance: 3 stars

Favorite Wine: Reisling

Way off the beaten path, even my GPS was confused. But it was a beautiful country setting, pleasant staff and nice wines.

Belle Meade Winery (written Sep 11, 2011)
Wine: 4 stars Winery: 4 stars Ambiance: 3 stars

Favorite Wine: Red Muscadine

We enjoyed the wine tasting after our tour of Belle Meade Plantation. The staff was friendly and seemed to know the wines. There was a nice selection of wines. There is no vineyard, they purchase their grapes. I believe their winemaker is also the winemaker at Keg Springs Winery. We will return to purchase more wine.

Arrington Vineyards (written Sep 10, 2011)
Wine: 5 stars Winery: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars

Favorite Wine: Reisling

Fantastic winery. Beautiful scenery, very friendly staff. They have a nice selection of wines and our tasting host was very knowledgeable. We had perfect weather, great day to visit and be outside. I would recommend Arrington and would suggest taking a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery.
