While visiting family in Phoenix we decided to go the the Arizona "Wine Country". I live in California in the real Wine Country and had to see for myself what Arizona Wine was about.
We liked the wines in cork. The screw cap wines need more time. Even though we are from Napa, we do not have anything against screw caps. Our 2 favorite Arizona wines were screw cap (Elgin and Callaghan). Some of our favorite wines in California are screw cap. I only mention the difference so that you know which vintages to try. Neat tasting room set up in the back of a building. The people were nice, only wish that they were more positive about the other wineries.

We have heard heaps about this wine maker and had to stop here. The wines are really good, the tasting area is a bit cramped but well worth waiting. They and Elgin seem to be the busiest and most popular. Our second favorite wine from Arizona was here (first at Elgin).
Only drawback to this place is the attitude they have towards the other wineries in the area.
A must stop.

This was the next winery after our stop at the Village of Elgin, their wines are good, but it is hard to follow the Elgin Monkey Cab (our favorite). The views here are breathtaking, very different from what we see in Napa, but really clam and peaceful.

We were told by some of the other wineries in the area that the Village of Elgin Winery only makes sweet wine and since we only liked dry wines we should not even bother. Boy are they FOS.
Our favorite Arizona wine came from this winery, a Cabernet Sauvignon named Playful Monkey, the wine has perfect balance, superb tannin and the right amount of fruit. This is the best wine we have yet to encounter outside of California.
The tasting room was a little crowded when we got there and I see why, great people and great wines. If anyone tells you to leave them off your list, DON'T!
